What is Mirror/Match, Pace, Test, Lead and Backtrack?
The purpose of this model is to enter the other person's state of mind through the mirroring and matching of their body language, voice quality and words used. By doing so you ensure success in communication is inevitable.
-
Mirror: An action or reaction that faithfully reflects or gives a true picture of what has been observed. Mirroring reflects the energy, synchrony, rhythm and speed and manner of the observed behaviour. Mirroring is not mimicking, when you mimic you copy the surface movement, when you mirror, you reflect the meaning and energy hidden within the movement.
-
Match: An action or reaction that is like another in one or more specified qualities. Matching reflects one or more of the qualities not necessary all of them as with Mirroring, but always matching the quality of energy.
-
Pace: When you pace an interaction you move with the ebb and flow of the rate of activity. If your prospect or audience is slow to respond then your pace must reflect this for a respectful period of time before you progress to testing the level of rapport.
-
Test: An action/reaction that is different from your client or audience to test if rapport is established. When deep levels of rapport have been achieved the person will mirror or match your behaviour, this is evidence that you have the lead over the conversation. Your may now direct the conversation to achieve the goal.
-
Lead: Is the attitude and manner of directing and guiding the conversation toward achieving an outcome or goal.
-
Backtrack: Backtrack is the thread that tightens rapport and ensures it is maintained effortlessly. Backtracking is relating the essence, not verbatim, of what has just been said.

Mirroring/Matching
To mirror merely select the body language or quality you wish to mirror, and then in synchrony mirror that behaviour. If you choose to mirror a head tilt, then move your head in synchrony to the same angle. The effect must be as though the other person is looking in a mirror. |
