The Heart of the Beast?

Begin by identifying a situation where you are stuck or want to change a habitual response and its accompanying emotions.

Write down - now - your answers to these questions.

What will you be like when you are free of this emotion?

How will you be different?

The Process is about: Allowing - Welcoming - Embracing

Step 1 - Allowing
  1. Recall the situation and access the emotions so that you are feeling the experience as if it were the first time.

  2. Associate into the emotions by visualising or sensing the experience through your own eyes. If you are seeing yourself in the mental movie you are running, then step into your body, be there fully in the experience and feel the emotions.

  3. Allow the emotion (fear, shame, anger, anxiety, avoidance etc) to simply be present, without judgement or resistance, just as you would allow someone to be in the same room with you.

  4. Another way to say this is to surrender and feel the emotion. As you do so, simply observe what happens to the emotion as you drop any resistance to it.

Strategies to Assist Successful Completion Step 1 Allowing
  • You will have different experiences.

  • You might experience an ease of tension as you drop your resistance to the emotion.

  • You might find the emotion increases before it subsides.

  • The key to this step is to notice your experience without judgement.

  • Concentrate your attention to what you experience in your body.

  • Take your time, there is no need to rush, this is true of all the steps.

Step 2 - Welcoming
  1. Hear now the sound of your doorbell (Imagine it if necessary)

  2. When you answer the door you find a long lost friend who you are overjoyed to see! Welcome the emotion you are tapped into just as you would your long lost friend.

  3. As you do so, carefully observe what happens as you welcome this emotion.

  4. Continue to welcome the emotion until you feel a shift.

Strategies to Assist Successful Completion Step 2

  • You may experience some resistance to welcoming the emotion.

  • It may not make logical or intuitive sense to you and flies in the face of the emotion.

  • Stop trying to figure it out and welcome the emotion.

  • You will experience a shift, often in the form of lightening or lifting of the emotion.

Step 3 - Embracing
  1. Embrace the emotion with love.

  2. Embrace the emotion with love and hold it just like you would a small child or someone you love deeply.

  3. Tapping into a memory of deep love, such as holding your first child or similar experience, can be very powerful here.
  4. Imagine your heart opening with love and feeling this love flow over the emotion. Embrace it with love and notice what happens to the emotion as you do so.
  5. Hold it until you feel a complete shift and things have settled in.
Strategies to Assist Successful Completion Step 3
  • The shift of emotion during step 3 is usually subtle or...it can be very dramatic or even disorientating. You may not feel anything at first but as you remain holding the emotion in love, all of a sudden the emotion will shift.
  • Sometimes the shift will happen immediately and sometimes not.
  • You may experience the shift in this step as a profound relief or peace.
  • The shift can take a little while for the change to settle.
  • You may feel disoriented as the change is consolidated.
  • Allow things to settle in their own time.
