4. Deflecting the Sidewinder
What manoeuvres can you deploy if someone persistently and aggressively interrupts you? Over the course of the presentation you will have tried a number of tactics.
For example: you will have tried the following tactics...
-
'Defer' the interaction to the end of the presentation.
-
'Identify' the real reason behind the question.
-
'Remain Silent' thus encouraging the group to intervene on your behalf.
-
'Manage' the interaction by continually answering the individual in a reasoned and patient manner, the group eventually will become impatient with their colleague and will intervene.
-
'Investigate' ask the group what are their thoughts on the subject / question.
-
'Lead' and request to be allowed to continue to the end of the presentation when discussion will recommence.
In the event that these have not worked, step aside to a new position in the room and ensure you are standing with confidence and conviction. 5. Head on Engagement with the Side Winder
It is imperative that you step aside to a new position in the room and ensure you are standing with confidence and conviction. This is a tactical move, which will catch the individual off guard.
With full command of Your Voice and Posture you say:
'I am sorry but I cannot continue to present in this situation.
I have been requested to present to you today yet your continual interruptions are preventing both myself,
and the rest of the audience from achieving our objectives.'
Or
Thank you, I will not continue with this presentation as your interruptions are preventing the audience and myself from achieving our objective.
Now you engage directly to ascertain the true purpose behind the interruptions, and suggesting that the debate be continued at the end of the presentation on a one to one basis. They will either leave or become silent and comply with the overall wishes. All this must be executed in rapport and in a calm confident state. Your state will determine the outcome.
6. The Lost Presentation
Should the individual ignore your request and continue to interrupt, then you must follow through with your threat and stop the presentation and then leave the room immediately.
Finally: In my experience the most difficult hecklers are the ones who engage in covert sabotage. They try to elicit support from others about their concerns and opinions. Transferring their feelings onto others through these conversations will change the entire group dynamics, if you let them. Should this happen, your approach must be to tackle the behaviour head-on. Build rapport, keep a calm confident state and above all be direct and respectful.
