Vital Visuals
Stimulate the Response you Desire and Perform in the Knowledge you have Prepared...
Use multi sensory language - spice up their experience, do not blindfold them with one-way language...
Multi sensory language is the basis of communication and it is as natural as walking and also as diverse. We have five senses and in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) these are called representational systems or responsive channels. They indicate how we receive, process, store and retrieve information and they are the manner in which we 'code' our experience. They drive our internal experience and expressed language patterns. This information is dynamite to anyone wishing to influence a situation from a buying decision to engaging with aggressive questioning at the end of a presentation.
Mix your sensory specific words, especially at the beginning of the presentation. Remember that most people have a favoured way of thinking, either in pictures, sounds or feelings and this favoured manner of thought will be expressed as favoured language. If you wanted to communicate effectively with one person you would assess how they thought and tailor your language to that mode. With many people in a group you need to use all three modes to capture everyone. Make sure that the people who are visual will SEE what you mean, that you come over LOUD and clear to the people who have keen hearing - and those who think more with their bodies get a good GRASP of what you are saying.

Increase your vocabulary - make them smile!
Developing a rich and varied vocabulary that will give your listeners a taste of the subject matter, developing rich and diverse language is the mark of a true professional. As a powerful presenter your role is to fill in the blank space between visual and explanation, and give the audience the ride of their life using abundant and varied language. It is a journey after all. There are some hundreds of thousands of words in the English Language and the average person's vocabulary consists of just two or three thousand.
Because you are you... you will not be aware of the words you use regularly. And I know you will use the same selection of words in your preparation as in your daily speech. Combat sameness and repetition, prepare your presentation in the normal manner, then edit each visual looking for language patterns and then change them to enrich both your thinking and the audience's experience. |
