Stimulate the Response you Desire and Perform in the Knowledge you have Prepared...
Structure
An organised structured presentation builds confidence within you as a presenter, and in your audience because they react to the relaxed state that you are in due to your keen preparation and professional approach. This leaves you critical mental room to perform right at the edge of your abilities, because you innately know you are prepared for the challenge ahead.
Key Points for Structure
-
Choose your emotional state.
-
Decide the emotional attitude of your audience.
-
Structuring of the presentation.
-
Transition strategies.
Choose your emotional state and decide the emotional attitude of your audience
Select the emotional state you want to be in for the presentation, i.e. open, flexible and approachable. A state is your way of 'being' at any given moment. It is an indication of the quality of your existence as you interact with the world.
Your state manifests in you:
-
Neurological activity.
-
Physical energy.
-
General activity.
-
Emotions.
-
Mental activity.
We often distinguish between different states and give them labels such as: alert, tired, curious, depressed, happy, expectant, relaxed, excited, etc. In the process of living we are continuously moving from one state to another and it is important to realise that we have control and choice over the states we are in and that we can change them at will. Change your thinking and change your state.

Sequencing states is an art that is largely unrecognised. Whenever you are presenting, both you and your audience are moving through different states. People who are adept at sequencing states are good stand-up comedians, storytellers, and inspirational speakers. Often the audience is barely aware of the different states they are going through, only the end result of their emotions.
Because states manifest through emotions, neurological and physical activity it is important not to choose more than three states for your overall emotional balance during the presentation. You will be consciously developing these states and yet still manifesting additional states unconsciously because that is what we do. Any more than three can overburden you emotionally. |
