Stephen Cornes

Executive Coach
Fearless Engagement

“The role of the senior leader results in the loss of people to bounce ideas off, a reduction in creativity, and a lack of truly constructive challenge.

My great joy is to be all of these things so you can be the best you can be.”

The Personal Bit
60 seconds’ work and play…

3 words that sum you up?
Energetic. Fixer. Colleague.

And 3 words that don’t?
Boring. Opinionated. Whimsical.

The best audience/coachees?
Two core groups I love working with are the big picture, strategic challenges that borrow from my academic knowledge and those that want to improve their communications who borrow from my acting background.

What makes you laugh or smile?
When someone stubs their toe.. I have no idea why this cracks me up every time!

Talk to me about…
Where you see yourself tomorrow and how I can help you get there.

Ideal superpower?
I would like to be able to instantly translocate to anywhere in the world – work in London in the morning, snowboard in Colorado in the afternoon and party in Berlin by evening!

Biggest ‘Doh!’ moment?
Complaining to the person next to me at a wedding about the volume someone else was talking at.. to which they replied, “that’s my partner.” Doh!

When not coaching, you’ll find me…
Visiting the theatre, hitting the slopes on my snowboard, finding something new to try in the magic that is London.

My Objective:

To partner with successful people in a thought provoking, educational and inspiring process that maximises their personal and professional potential. Using a psychologically safe and structured approach, we identify key high-performance opportunities and develop a roadmap to make these opportunities a reality.

Executive Coach

Stephen’s deep experience of working at the top of global companies, combined with his extensive coaching skills and experience, have made him a highly sought-after executive coach for CEOs, boards, and leadership teams. Whether it is working on a transformational change project with the president of a Canadian Investment Bank or supporting a CEO and founder in the aerospace industry as they drive towards IPO, Stephen can create an infrastructure that supports the unique circumstances of each coachee.

With a background in consulting and Investment Banking, combined with multiple business degrees, Stephen naturally speaks the language of business. In addition, his extensive work in leadership consulting provides him with both a pragmatic understanding of business challenges, and his theoretical research allows him to provide his coachees with easy to implement tools they can apply straight away at work.

Feedback from clients has recognised Stephen’s broad and deep understanding of leadership challenges and how rapidly Stephen understood the crucial challenges and where to focus. This ability to straddle strategy and detail means less time explaining and more time understanding and strategising, a core component of the process clients sincerely appreciate.

Stephen has worked in Finance, Fintech, FMCG, Legal, Insurance, Wealth Management, Property, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Engineering, Education, Governmental, and other industries. In addition, he has worked in 28 different countries with leadership teams at all stages of development.

Stephen also does pro-bono work for start-ups that are going through funding rounds. This has proved exceptionally useful as his scaled organisation experience is helpful to founders whilst the agility of start-ups is of use to working with leaders of larger organisations.

Professional Credentials

Stephen uses a broad range of skills and experiences to support senior leaders. With multiple business experience and degrees, combined with a strong understanding of how people learn and exceptional communication skills, Stephen can find a unique approach tailored specifically for your needs.

My time with Stephen:

“Consummate professional … his sessions are very practical and the takeaways are clear and easy to implement. His ‘real world’ business experience combined with academic rigour are complemented by his time in the theatre”

Commercial Experience

Business Background and a life in the real world…

Stephen started his career in IT Consulting, where he worked with CSC Computer Sciences on projects with BHS, Anglian Water and BHP Billiton. He then moved to join the fast-track management programme at Merrill Lynch, where he worked on the debt-equity trading floor and was a qualified trader.

Stephen went looking for new challenges and chose to go to Drama School. After graduation, he specialised in theatre and has hundreds of voiceover credits to his name. These drama skills have proved incredibly useful for Stephens Clients, and this combination of business acumen and drama resulted in his transition into the world of executive education and communications. Curious to learn more, he returned to university and completed a Masters in Executive Education and has been working in leadership development consulting and coaching since 2004.
